Police Check: (all volunteers will be required to provide a countrywide police check from their country of origin)
Passport: I know it’s obvious but make sure your passport is up to date!
Travel Insurance: Talk to your travel agent for the best available insurance. It is best to get full insurance which covers loss of ticket, passport, luggage etc and includes full health cover including evacuation from the country due to an accident or illness if necessary.
When working with Love In Action we ask that you have insurance as it is a requirement in covering yourself while working with us.
Visa: You can purchase your visa before you leave your country or once you arrive in Cambodia coming through the airport. (The latter is easiest)
To get a visa in Cambodia you will need * a spare passport photo
* $20 US dollars (tourist visa)
* $25 US dollars (business visa)
If you are staying longer than one month you need to purchase a business visa as this lasts three months and it saves having to depart the country after one month. A business visa is renewed while being allowed to continue in the country.
When filling in the reason for your visit do not put Christian ministry or work as they then become very suspicious of what you are doing in the country and it can make it difficult for the christian works you are volunteering for.
Put tourist or aid worker that will be sufficient.
Ruth’s Phone No. (In Cambodia) 012 66 37 91
Finance: Cambodia’s national currency is called riel. They use this for smaller purchases etc, but equally used is US dollars. How you prefer to take your currency is personal preference. You can take travellers cheques, cash (change it when you get in the country) or ATM card.
Cambodia is now up with the rest of the world with an increasing amount of ATM’s. To access these or to even take money out of the bank you need an ATM card with a visa card attachment as you cannot access your savings with an ordinary ATM savings card. So make sure it has a visa card attached to your savings account. Be aware that there are conversion and transaction fees when you draw out your money through ATM’s. Check with you bank regarding this. Most banks in Australia charge the same!
Communication: Access to the internet is readily available in Phnom Penh, but in the outer provinces it is more difficult. To make international phone calls is also accessible through internet cafes. If you are with us long term snail mail on our above address gets delivered to us.
Immunisation: We recommend that you visit your own doctor and get advice on the appropriate medication and immunisation. We do recommend anti-malaria medication, hepatitis, tetanus and typhoid immunization. This also is personal preference and doctors advice should be sort.
We do have access to a very thorough australian doctor in Phnom Penh if any medical needs arise.

Booking Tickets: Volunteers or Workers coming over to LIA leaving from Australia are recommended to work through the same travel agency as Love in Action as we can then assist you more with details. Note: For those who stay long term it is important to know if you require a six or twelve month ticket as cost does vary and it will cost you more if you decide to update to a twelve month ticket once in Cambodia.
Important Notice: The new international travel policy for taking make-up, liquids including perfumes, hair products, hand creams, shampoo , toothpaste etc in hand luggage are to be no more then 100mls in size. Only limited amounts are passed. They must fit in a A5 size sealable plastic bag.

When staying with us in our team house upstairs from our children’s home the cost is outlined on our application forms. Cost may vary due to teams or individuals. This may also vary from short term or long term stays. Please read these forms carefully.

International Teams can give them to Ruth upon arrival in Cambodia
Individuals who stay and work with us from outside Australia must forward these forms to our Australian office before there arrival in Cambodia.
This covers us for child protection for our children at LIA and also that each individual working with us understands they are taking full responsibility for their own welfare and we are cannot be held liable for any damage to them or there belongings. In saying this we do all we can to advise you for your safety and care. It is advised and polite to always inform Ruth or our selected overseers of your plans while staying and working with us at Love in Action. This is for your own safety and a protocol of LIA while working with us.
Volunteer Reference Form: Volunteers reference check must be completed if your stay will be longer than one month.
